Xen Virtualization
Solar VPS is Powered by Xen Virtualization
When it comes to virtualization technology, Cloud providers everywhere have to answer the question, “OpenVZ vs. Xen?” For us, Solar VPS answered that question with a resounding nod towards Xen VPS technologies. All Solar VPS technologies, from our internally developed VPS management suite, the SolarSystem, to SolarSystem add-ons like SolarSystem A.I. One-Click Cloud App Installer and SolarRay Website Uptime Monitoring, all of our VPS software is based on Xen. But the question remains, why did we choose Xen over KVM, OpenVZ or Virtuozzo? What is Virtualization Software?
As noted, virtual server software can be powered by a myriad of different Linux kernels – Xen, KVM, OpenVZ kernel or Virtuozzo. Instead of choosing OpenVZ templates or Virtuozzo, defined as:“OpenVZ (Open Virtuozzo) is an operating system-level virtualization technology based on the Linux kernel and operating system. OpenVZ allows a physical server to run multiple isolated operating system instances, known as containers. Virtual Private Servers (VPS’s), or Virtual Environments (VEs). It is similar to FreeBSD jails and Solaris Zones.” – Credit to WikipediaOr KVM, defined as:
““Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) is a virtualization infrastructure for the Linux kernel. KVM requires a processor with hardware virtualization extension. KVM has also been ported to FreeBSD and Illumos in the form of loadable kernel modules.”We choose Xen, defined as:
“Xen is a hypervisor providing services that allow multiple computer operating systems to execute on the same computer hardware concurrently… Xen is a native, or bare-metal hypervisor. It runs in a more privileged CPU state than any other software on the machine.”…due to the Xen’s popularity with the web hosting community. When the SolarSystem first launched, Solar VPS offered both OpenVZ and Xen virtualization technologies to our consumers. Over a few months, it became clear that the question of OpenVZ or Xen wasn’t really a question at all – the raw data proved that Xen virtualization software was the more popular Linux kernel. Although Solar VPS offered OpenVZ Ubuntu templates, Debian OpenVZ templates, Xen powered Cloud VPS solutions proved to be the more popular virtualization solution. In short, by utilizing Xen, Solar VPS is able to provide consumers with a reliable, powerful and cost friendly VPS Cloud service. Our Xen virtualization platform allows our consumers to enjoy the best virtual server software at an industry benchmark starting price of $17.50 per month.
